latest news today; admidst preparations for the upcoming general elections in Pakistan. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif revealed on Thursday that Nawaz Sharif, the leader of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) party, will come back to Pakistan next month to deal with legal matters. He shared this information in an interview with Hamid Mir on Geo News’ Capital Talk program.
PM Shehbaz intends to visit London to meet Nawaz after the interim government assumes control. He hopes this will happen soon. He’s confident Nawaz will return next month for legal matters and to lead election preparations. Nawaz has been living in London since November 2019 because of health reasons.
Nawaz Sharif’s political journey includes stepping down as the prime minister in 2016 because the highest court decided he concealed his assets. Subsequently, guilt was established against him in corruption cases related to Al-Azizia and Aveinfeild Apartment, which had been filed by the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) due to the Panama Papers leak. Appeals against these decisions are still pending, awaiting court consideration.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif indirectly made a joke about Imran Khan, the leader of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party. He noted Nawaz won’t wear protective gear, alluding to Imran Khan’s use of a bulletproof helmet during court.
This news coincides with the start of forming a temporary government after the National Assembly closed on August 9. The opposition parties’ coalition, Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM), decided to dissolve the assembly early, which gives the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) more time—90 days instead of the usual 60 days—to organize the general elections.
latest news: Caretaker PM
Talking about his meeting with the Opposition Leader of the National Assembly, Raja Riaz, to decide on who will be the temporary Prime Minister. The Prime Minister said, “We’re hoping that we’ll agree on the person for the job within the next three days.”
Under constitutional rules, the Prime Minister and the Opposition Leader have three days to finalize the temporary Prime Minister’s name. However, during their first discussion earlier today, they couldn’t agree on who it should be.
The Opposition Leader of the National Assembly explained after the meeting, “We’re planning to talk again tomorrow (Friday). We won’t tell anyone the names we’re considering until we make a decision.” This suggests that both sides are keeping their ideas secret for now. However, Raja Riaz mentioned sharing a list of candidates with the Prime Minister, hopeful for clarity tomorrow.
“I’ll talk more with the Opposition Leader tomorrow about who the temporary Prime Minister should be,” added the Prime Minister.
PM Shehbaz plans to discuss the interim Prime Minister choice with his brother, Nawaz Sharif.
Concerned about potential delays, the Prime Minister emphasized the need for prompt general elections. He emphasized that the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP), not the temporary government, is responsible for organizing elections.
